Chapter Ten

The rest of the week passed fast—at least the days did, as Rafa immersed himself in the casino’s finances. He introduced himself to Gina, the grandmotherly accounts payable manager who’d been with the company over twenty years. She knew everybody, she’d seen everything—and she liked to talk.

After the first afternoon with Gina, Rafa began reviewing the daily check run every morning. He didn’t like what he’d seen thus far. After a long second session with Gina, Rafa felt like he knew the casino’s expenses and its employees very well.

He was pretty sure Dean was skimming the casino in every way possible, not just helping himself to the wine. Odd office supply and furniture purchases, small—but frequent—petty cash vouchers with no documentation, and lots of show and event tickets listed as marketing expenses—in addition to the marketing department’s own similar expenses. Rafa started a file to document the abnormalities, and two days in, it was a half-inch thick. But he knew he’d need that plus a whole lot more if he was going to go head-to-head with Dean.

Late Friday afternoon, after thanking Gina for her tutorials and bidding her a good weekend, Rafa walked down the long hallway to the employee elevator to get up to the casino floor. He’d planned to meet Mario and Hugh for dinner, then check out the neighboring casino’s new nightclub. He pulled his phone out of his pocket as he walked, and his fingers grazed the buttons. It’d been three whole days since he’d seen Destiny. Seemed like three weeks.

He was dying to find out about the baby. Of course, he was going to ask her. But it just seemed odd to do so over the phone. He wished he could call and tell her Lucky Lane was once again a donor. But, unfortunately, when he went to talk to Liz in marketing on Wednesday, he found out she was on vacation the rest of the week. He left instructions with Liz’s assistant, who promised she’d take care of it first thing Monday.

He cradled his phone. So where did that leave him? He should just call and ask Destiny out again. But to what end? He was leaving soon. Did that matter? Why was this so difficult? He shoved the phone back in his pocket.

As he passed an intersection where a second hallway crossed with his, he saw movement about twenty feet away in his peripheral vision. He stopped. Paul and that same keno runner were arguing. A teenage boy with features resembling those of the keno runner cut in like he was trying to stop them. Paul stepped forward and shoved the teen. The keno runner jumped in between the two. Enough.

He’d seen something similar in Montreal—an employee shakedown. The ringleader, a poker dealer, had amassed a small fortune. Rafa fired him and anyone else he suspected of being involved. The general manager hadn’t been involved and supported Rafa completely, which was why Rafa never told his father. His father was unforgiving, and this would’ve tainted the man in his father’s eyes.
